    Josiah Willard Gibbs was born on February 11, 1839 in New Haven, Connecticut.

    He was the eldest of five children born to Josiah Willard Gibbs Sr. and Mary Anna Van Cleve. His father was a professor of sacred literature at Yale University and his mother was a descendant of the Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam.

    Gibbs was a precocious child and was able to read by the age of three. He was also a gifted mathematician and was able to solve complex equations by the age of seven.

    Gibbs attended the Hopkins School in New Haven and then went on to Yale University in 1854.
