Chitra Ganesh is the daughter of Indian immigrant parents, born and raised in Brooklyn.^[3] Her father won a greencard lottery and her parents immigrated from Calcutta, India to Brooklyn, New York in the early 1970s.

Ganesh grew up in the vibrant communities of Brooklyn and Hollis, Queens, amongst Indian, Guyanese, and Sri Lankan immigrant communities. Throughout her childhood she was immersed in visual representation of Bollywood posters, comics, and literature.
