Lauren Kate was born March 21, 1981 in Dayton, Ohio and raised in Dallas, Texas. She is an author of young-adult fiction best known for her Fallen series, which benefitted from many months of theological research.

She received an M.A. in Creative Writing from UC Davis, where she also teaches. In 2009, Disney optioned the film rights to the entire series on the day of Fallen's release.
